Heat Treatment
Certified Heat-Treated Pallets from FWI
Heat treatment is a form of pest control for wood pallets. Using a kiln, pallets are heated to a core temperature that will ensure the safety and cleanliness of your pallets. For industries that require heat- treated pallets, FWI Pallets maintains an on-site kiln to treat each of our new, reconditioned or remanufactured pallets.
International Requirements
For businesses that plan on shipping to countries that are a part of the United Nations, you’ll want to make sure you have a trustworthy, certified source for heat-treated pallets. A treaty from the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) requires that all solid wood packaging (i.e. pallets) must be heat-treated or fumigated before being imported into any member country. The ISPM 15 governs the appropriate processes to fumigate wood pallets, boxes and crates. It requires that a pallet’s wood core temperature reaches 56° Celsius (or 132.8° Fahrenheit) for at least 30 minutes, or that the wood be fumigated with methyl bromide.
Why Heat-Treated Pallets are the Best Choice
At FWI, we prefer the heat treatment method that adheres to the ISPM standards. The use of methyl bromide has negative effects on the Earth’s ozone levels and potentialy its toxic. Also, heat-treated pallets create a far safer working environment for everyone that comes in contact with the pallets.
To ensure that we produce IPPC compliant pallets, our heat treatment process involves heating the wood core temperature to IPPC-required levels. This meets the ISPM 15 Heat Treating Standards, which require a core temperature of 132.8° Fahrenheit.
We provide heat treatment to nearly any business in a timely, consistent and trusted manner. To learn more about our certified heat-treated pallets, contact us
